BYU basketball: Cougars put a hundred on Chicago State

Provo • Four games in and Brigham Young is exactly where Dave Rose hoped it would be, undefeated and ready to face its first test away from the Marriott Center.

Only Tuesday's home game with Mississippi Valley State remains before BYU heads to Texas to play South Florida in the South Padre Island Invitational on Nov. 26.

"We feel really comfortable with a certain group of guys," Rose said following his team's 109-60 blowout of Chicago State, his 130th victory at BYU. "What we need to do is expand that. Consistency is what we're looking for the next few weeks."

Saturday's margin of victory allowed the Cougar coach to experiment with different combinations as well as providing valuable minutes to end of the BYU bench as 11 players scored, six in double figures, led by Jimmer Fredette's 27.

For the record, Kyle Collinsworth, who finished with 12 points, dropped in BYU's 100th point with a free throw. Chris Collinsworth and Brandon Davies finished with 15 points each.

"We were able to push it, to play at our tempo," Collinsworth said. "Games like this...it allows us to make adjustments. For me, I tried to do things I don't normally do to try new things."

As far as Saturday's result was concerned, it did not take long to realize Chicago State (1-3), part of the Great West Conference, was completely outclassed. The Cougars (4-0) took a 60-29 lead into half.

The Cougars were relentless on both ends of the court, pulling down 18 offensive rebounds, while forcing 21 turnovers. .

Bombing away from the perimeter, Fredette went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc shot and 9 of 12 total in his 21 minutes, on the court.

"We came out and attacked well in the first 10 minutes of the game," said Rose, who was also unhappy with how the Cougars hurried too much in the final eight minutes. "We shot the ball with a lot of confidence and defensively we forced them into tough shots.

"We were able to play a lot of guys and get them a lot of experience."
