Dao Ones

Show of the week • Dao Ones is known to most fans, including those of his U92 radio station shows, as DJ Dao, but he no longer wants to be called just a DJ. "I separate myself from other DJs," the Salt Lake City resident said. Instead, he prefers to be called a "party-rocker." Ones just signed a deal for a weekly Saturday night residency at The Complex's Vertigo Room, and to kick it off, he's holding a show called "The DJ Vs. The Instruments Live" on Saturday. He has enlisted local drummer Andy Patterson to perform with him; the duo will mash up recordings and samples Ones will spin on his turntables, with live drums provided by Patterson. On future Saturday shows, Ones hopes to collaborate onstage with other local musicians, including a congo drummer and a horn player. "I want to make it harder to be a DJ," the brash Ones said. "We're stepping it up. It seems like anyone with a laptop considers himself to be a DJ." Patterson and Ones have been rehearsing all week for this inaugural gig, and Ones promises a show reminiscent of those performed by Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and DJ AM. "We're bouncing it all over the place," Ones said.
