East High, Fort Herriman Middle students sweep essay contest

East High and Fort Herriman Middle School students swept top awards in the Utah Central Credit Union's annual essay competition.

Several hundred students from six school districts -- Granite, Jordan, Davis, Carbon, Murray and Salt Lake -- entered the 2010 Young Leadership Scholarship essay contest, but the first, second and third place awards and two honorable mentions went to students from East High and Fort Herriman Middle.

The topic of the essay: "What is the greatest lesson you have learned in life?" The first place winner won a cash award of $1,000. Second place came with $500, two third place winners won $250 each, and two honorable mentions came with $50 each.

First place went to ninth-grader Kallyn Hoffman of Fort Herriman Middle School; second place went to East High senior Byron Ensign; two third place prizes were awarded to ninth-grader Aysa Johnson of Fort Herriman Middle School and East High senior Veronica Fernanda Fuenzalida. Honorable mentions went to East High senior Morgan Dewey and East High ninth-grader Bonnie Bennett.

Ten prizes of $25 savings accounts were also awarded to essay writers whose first languages were not English.

The top essays will be posted on Utah Central's website www.utahcentral.com.
