One piece of Utah's football coaching staff is in place Thursday as the Utes are in the process of finalizing the hiring of former Minnesota offensive line coach Tim Davis to fill the vacancy left by Blake Miller, who is expected to join Memphis' staff. Davis, a three-year letterwinner for the Utes as an offensive tackle from 1978-80, was among the Minnesota assistants let go in December when Jerry Kill was hired to replace Tim Brewster, who was fired as the Gophers' head coach on Oct. 17. He coached Utah's offensive line from 1990-96 before joining Wisconsin's staff. In addition to being on Utah's staff together, Davis and Utah coach Kyle Whittingham were also on Idaho State's staff together in 1989 when Davis coached the offensive line and Whittingham was the linebacker/special teams coach. Davis also coached with Norm Chow, who has been in talks with Utah, at USC.
