Letting lacrosse in

On a whim, I decided to play lacrosse my senior year of high school. Eight years later, I am still involved. I now coach the girl's varsity program at Olympus High School.

Every year, finding field space is a struggle. We are registered with the high school as a club, but due to current district restrictions, we are not allowed high school field space. Last year, we found space at a school (and shelled out big bucks to use it), but this season we have been unsuccessful in locating a field. We currently practice in a church parking lot.

Lacrosse has a strong community in Utah. It is financially self-sufficient, and if allowed access to high school fields, it would benefit the schools. We raise our own funds, and the Utah Lacrosse Association provides some grants to help improve fields. Members of the lacrosse community would make sure that field access was mutually beneficial.

We worry about rising obesity rates in our children, but sadly, girls who want to be active and play lacrosse have to play in a parking lot because they chose a "club sport."
