Sandy—It's official. Confirming a Salt Lake Tribune story from last week, Real Salt Lake announced Friday it has signed goalkeeper Nick Rimando to a contract extension. According to RSL general manager Garth Lagerwey, the one-year extension will keep Rimando with the team through the 2013 season. Terms were not disclosed. Rimando, the most valuable player in the 2009 MLS Cup, made $131,000 last season. "We are happy to have been able to reach an agreement with Nick, to reward him for his stellar performance in goal," said Lagerwey. Rimando, 31, enjoyed the best season of his illustrious 11-year MLS career in 2010. He made his first appearance in the MLS All-Star Game and was the player of the month for June. Rimando recorded a league-high 14 shutouts and finished with a career-best goals-against average of 0.67. "We wanted to get this process over quickly, and a lot of credit goes to the RSL front office, Garth Lagerwey and [coach] Jason Kreis," Rimando said. "This would not be possible without their help. I think the mutual respect we all have for each other ... went a long way in getting a deal done."
