The best amateur boxers the state of Utah has to offer will compete Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the USA Boxing state championships at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, 2825 S. 200 East in Salt Lake City.

The tournament will also serve as a first-round qualifier for the 2012 USA Olympic team. Winners will move on the four-corners regional, which will be held in Salt Lake City in April.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children.

Louie's Boxing Club, based at SLC's Sorensen Multicultural and Unity Fitness Center, will send a strong contingent to the weekend's event, including Olympic hopeful Michael Gomez at 141 lbs. Gomez won the state title at 152 lbs. last year.

The event also includes female boxing, with SLC's Mary Gwin, 27, a title hopeful at 112 lbs.

West Valley City's much-accomplished Isaac Aguilar will also compete, at 123 lbs.

Utah-based Harmon's Grocery Stores is a major sponsor, but the Utah amateur boxers are in need of more financial help to cover registration fees for participants, managers, trainers and the like.
