The Road Home shelter to be honored by national group

The Road Home, Utah's largest homeless shelter, will receive a national award in recognition for its efforts to help end homelessness.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness has named The Road Home the recipient of its annual Nonprofit Sector Achievement Award, to be presented July 14 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The Alliance selects one homeless service provider each year for the award.

The Road Home, founded in 1988, operates three shelters within its Salt Lake City facility: a women's shelter, a men's shelter and a shelter for families. It served approximately 8,000 people last year. The average stay for a family at the shelter is 40 days. In recent years, it has launched several innovative initiatives aimed at moving its clients into permanent housing.
