Teen killed in Powder Mountain motocross accident

A teen died in a motocross accident Thursday at Powder Mountain Resort after losing control of his bike during a practice run.

Dylan Perkins, 16, was registered for the Monster Energy Powder Mountain Motocross racing event and traveled with his family from their home in Surprise, Ariz.

Powder Mountain builds tracks each year for the event from its ski runs and draws in crowds from across the country.

Around 11 a.m. Perkins crashed his motorcycle after a jump, landing on his head and neck and suffering internal injuries said Sgt. Ryon Hadley, of the Weber County Sheriff's Office.

Paramedics were on the scene but could not detect vital signs in the teen. Though a helicopter was at the resort for serious injuries, responders used an ambulance to transport his body to a nearby hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead.

Family members who were at the event accompanied him to the hospital.

"These guys are airborne. They really are extreme riders," Hadley said.

Perkins was wearing full protective gear, including a helmet, gloves and padding at the time of the accident.

Later Thursday, two more crashes were reported, resulting in broken ankles for two other participants.

The tournament, consisting of roughly 200 riders, will continue as scheduled through Sunday.
