Salt Lake County inmate kills himself in jail

An inmate killed himself at the Salt Lake County Jail on Sunday evening.

Steven Edward Elliot, 26, died from self-inflicted cuts, said jail Lt. Michael DeNiro.

Jail staff found Elliot bleeding and took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He left a suicide note;his family has been notified of his death.

Jail staff members were investigating the death. They have recovered the instrument Elliot used to cut himself, but were not yet releasing details about the incident.

Elliot was arrested on Aug. 23 on suspicion of burglary, theft and possession of stolen property.

In 2002, he was sent to prison for aggravated robbery, and was paroled in 2006. His sentence was terminated in July 2009, said Jim Hatch of the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole.
