Two Utah schools have been named 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools for academic success.
Milford Elementary School in Milford and Soldier Hollow Charter School in Midway were named as winners of the award Thursday. They were among 305 schools nationwide to receive the honor for either academic excellence or success in closing achievement gaps.
Soldier Hollow Charter School won the award for academic improvement, and Milford won for being a high performing school though it serves many disadvantaged students.
To win the award, a school must be nominated by state education officials. Those schools then apply to the U.S. Department of Education for possible recognition.
Winning schools receive plaques and flags to signify their status as National Blue Ribbon Schools.
