About 600 students at Lincoln Elementary School in Salt Lake City received gifts Thursday as part of the Utah Central Credit Union's annual drive.
On homemade ornaments that were hanged from trees at the credit union branch offices, students asked for two presents each. Visitors to the credit union then chose ornaments and bought the gifts. Each student requested a "want" and a "need."
The school has a large refugee population and nearly 88 percent of Lincoln's students qualify for free or reduced-price meals, and many students asked for basic items such as blankets, pencils, pillows, coats and food.
