Just what the BYU basketball team didn't need as it prepares for No. 6 Baylor on Saturday in the Marriott Center happened at practice on Thursday afternoon. Sixth man Stephen Rogers, who is averaging 9.9 point and 2.2 rebounds per game, injured his knee at practice and was taken to a nearby hospital for an MRI. "Stephen hurt his knee. And he's had a problem [with the same knee] for about two weeks," coach Dave Rose said. "He had to come out of the Utah game the other night because he bumped knees. But today it seemed pretty serious. He was in a lot of pain, and they took him to the hospital to have an MRI. So we will know a little bit more about that tonight." Rose said it will be a "big blow, if [Rogers] can't play," at noon on Saturday against the Bears. Tuesday, Rose announced that forward Chris Collinsworth had exploratory surgery on his sore knee and that the 6-9 sophomore will be out for three weeks or more.—————————- More odds and ends from practice: * Rose said that Matt Carlino won't start against Baylor on Saturday, but is expected to get some playing time. The coach said he hasn't decided yet who will start at the point, Craig Cusick or Anson Winder."That is a good question. I am really comfortable with both those guys at the point guard position," Rose said. "I think that the last two days of practice, they have both practiced well. I just feel that we have some really good depth at that spot." I asked Rose if Carlino is going to be as good as advertised."Come to the game. Or turn the TV on, one of the two," he said. The game will be televised by BYUtv. The coach said Carlino will see the floor. "We will get him in. He will get minutes, and then we will see how he plays, and we will go from there, kind of like the majority of our players. We have got a really deep team, and hopefully we can get a lot of really good play out of [our] whole roster," Rose said. "Basically, that's kind of how we have done things here for a long time. If you play well, you play more. And hopefully we get a lot of guys playing well." * Rose said Baylor reminds him of the Houston teams he played on, which were known as Phi Slamma Jamma and featured Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon. "I think they had 10 dunks the other night in a game. That's probably more dunks than we have had all season," Rose said. * The coach said this is the first of a home-and-home series with Baylor. Baylor coach Scott Drew's only stipulation was that the game be played on Dec. 17, and that it ends before 3 p.m. so the Bears can get back to Waco on Saturday night. Baylor has a game on Monday, against Paul Quinn, an NAIA school in Dallas.
