State colleges: Maine outguns Utah Valley University men's basketball team

Orono, Maine • The Utah Valley men's basketball team pieced together a 25-6 run midway through the second half, but couldn't overcome a 27-point deficit as Maine's hot shooting propelled the Black Bears to a 77-60 victory over the Wolverines on Monday night in Memorial Gymnasium.

"Maine came out very aggressive to begin the game and put us on our heels," said UVU coach Dick Hunsaker. "Frankly, they had us backpedalling all night. They are a very strong offensive team and our defense just wasn't up to the challenge."

Ben Aird led UVU (6-7) with 13 points.

Women's basketball

Utah State 70, Northern Arizona 51 • In Logan, senior forward Ashlee Brown had 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Aggies won on School Day at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Maddy Plunkett and Devyn Christensen added 13 points each as Utah State (6-5) snapped a four-game losing streak.

Khyra Conerly led NAU (5-7) with 16 points.

Utah State went 6-of-13 from 3-point range.South Dakota 63, Utah Valley 54 • In Orem, the Wolverines (5-5) were just 5-of-34 from the floor in the first half, and their late rally came up short against the Coyotes (7-2).

Sammie Jensen led UVU (5-5) with 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Taylor Huber came off the bench to score 12 points. The Wolverines pulled within six in the final moments of the game, but the slow start was too much to overcome —
