Carry on my wayward son .... Ex-BYU Heaps picks Kansas

As you probably already know, Jake Heaps announced today that he is transferring to Kansas. The former BYU quarterback visited Lawrence last weekend, where former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is now the head coach. Apparently, Weis recruited Heaps when he was at Notre Dame, before Heaps chose BYU, so the two were already acquainted.

Best line of the day on the Heaps transfer, from former Tribune sportswriter Patrick Kinahan, on twitter: "Carry on my wayward son." A reference to the greatest hit from the band Kansas, for you youngsters.

Heaps leaves BYU ranked No. 16 on the school's career list for all-time passing yards with 3,768. He's behind Sean Covey, ahead of Marc Lyons. Here's a short notebook from Wednesday's BYU football practice. Shortly after the Heaps news broke today, word came out from Scott Eklund of jcfootball.com that BYU has signed a defensive tackle from El Camino JC in Southern California. Marques Johnson, a 6-1, 300-pound sophomore, visited Provo last weekend and signed his letter-of-intent today. Johnson will have three years to play two. He also had offers from Indiana and Washington State. Last year, Johnson had 31 tackles, including 10 for losses, and five sacks for his team, according to Eklund. There was no BYU football media availability today, although the Cougars practiced again this morning in preparation for the Dec. 30 Armed Forces Bowl.
