State colleges: Southern Utah win streak ended by IPFW

Fort Wayne, Ind. • Trey McCorkle scored 18 points and IPFW pulled away in the second half to beat Southern Utah 79-58 on Tuesday night.

Frank Gaines added 12 points, Michael Kibiloski 11 and Mario Hines 10 for the Mastodons (8-6, 2-3 Summit League), who ended a three-game slide. Hines had a game-high nine rebounds.

Jackson Stevenett scored 19 and Ramell Taylor 10 for the Thunderbirds (7-7, 2-2), whose three-game winning streak ended.

"I thought we came out and had heavy legs, we were a step slow, our legs were not there," SUU coach Roger Reid said. "The guys were trying, the guys played hard, but sometimes the travel shows up and I think it did tonight. We got two wins on this road trip though, and although we're disappointed to lose tonight, we lost to a good team that really played well against us tonight."

IPFW shot 53 percent (31 of 58) and made 6 of 15 3-pointers. Southern Utah went 0 of 6 from long range.

The Thunderbirds trailed 36-29 at halftime before pulling within 42-39 on Damon Heuir's basket with 15:11 left.

But an 8-2 run on a three-point play by Gaines, a 3-pointer by Kibiloski and a basket by Justin Jordan put the Mastodons ahead 50-41 with 11:11 left. The lead steadily increased as IPFW outscored Southern Utah 43-29 in the second half.

Wyoming 76, Utah Valley 70 • At Orem, Francisco Cruz scored 21 points and Leonard Washington hit the go-ahead basket with 35 seconds left as Wyoming held off Utah Valley.

Luke Martinez added 17 points for the Cowboys (13-2), Washington 14 and Adam Waddell 10.

Isiah Williams' 23 points led the Wolverines (7-10). Keith Thompson added 13 and Ben Aird and Alfonzo Hubbard 10 apiece. Geddes Robinson grabbed 11 rebounds.

Both teams were hot from 3-point range. Wyoming made 11 of 24 (46 percent) and Utah Valley 7 of 16 (44 percent).

Williams' 3-pointer pulled the Wolverines within 69-68 with 2:26 left. Then he put Utah Valley ahead 70-69 with a jumper 31 seconds later.

But Washington converted a layup on the next possession for a 71-70 lead, and Wyoming finished it with five free throws.

Wyoming had been the only team in the nation not to allow an opponent more than 60 points.

Dixie State 85, Academy of Art 72 • At San Francisco, Derek Owen had 18 points to lead five T-birds in double-digit scoring. Dixie improved to 7-3 overall.

Women's basketball

Utah State 83, Asbury 53 • At Logan, junior center Banna Diop led the Aggies (8-5) with 13 points, as USU easily dispatched its NAIA opponent from Wilmore, Ky.

San Jose State 70, Southern Utah 68 • At Cedar City, sophomore forward Carli Moreland posted 22 points and 17 rebounds, but the T-birds' rally came up short as the team fell to 4-10.

Academy of Art 60, Dixie State 59 • At San Francisco, Becca Thomas had 16 points and seven rebounds, but the Red Storm (6-4) shot just 26.5 percent from the field in the first half.
