Midvale City Councilman Wayne Sharp has been sentenced to a year of probation for stealing parts and tools from a neighbor.

The 47-year-old Sharp, who was elected to the council in 1998, pleaded guilty in November to misdemeanor charges of attempted burglary and theft, avoiding felony convictions that would have disqualified him from holding office.

Prosecutors say Sharp broke into a neighbor's shed near 300 W. Wasatch St. and stole a welding machine, engines and a cement mixer. Police found the cement mixer in Sharp's home and officials said the councilman sold the other items.

Third District Judge Randall Skanchy on Monday suspended a one-year jail term and ordered Sharp to complete probation. The councilman's attorney said $11,000 in restitution had already been paid.

Sharp did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday.
