Police Tuesday were looking for a carjacking suspect who reportedly attempted to rob a west Salt Lake City man at gunpoint.

Salt Lake City police Detective John Ashdown said investigators did not have much to go on, just that the suspect was a medium-height Latino adult male who "spoke English well," and wore a black-and-white hooded sweatshirt.

The incident took place about 7 p.m. Monday as the victim was parking his 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe near the Acapulco Market at 1430 W. Indiana Avenue (830 South).

"Before the driver could exit his vehicle, the male suspect jumped in, pointed a gun at him and ordered him to drive away," Ashdown said. "A short time later, he demanded that the driver get out and give him his wallet. Before the victim could hand him the wallet, however, the guy drove off."

The owner found his SUV about 45 minutes later abandoned near the intersection of Indiana Avenue and Glendale Street (1137 West). He called police, who unsuccessfully searched the area for the suspect with the aid of police dogs.
