Notes following Jazz shootaround Thursday at EnergySolutions Arena.

Josh Howard (left quad) is out. Derrick Favors (right ankle) will play, while Jamaal Tinsley (dermatitis) is a game-time decision.

Utah is expected to start Devin Harris, Raja Bell, Gordon Hayward, Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson against Dallas.

Howard said his quad is feeling better and he's made progress in his rehab during the last 24 hours. If his improvement continues, Howard could return Saturday against Minnesota or Jan. 25 against Toronto.

"I know my teammates have got my back and they're going to go out there and play hard," Howard said.

Favors went through a full practice Wednesday, didn't feel any pain and received a greenlight from Utah's training staff.

"I'm back," he said.

Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said the defending-champion Mavericks are still the team to beat in the NBA.

More from Corbin.

Asked about Utah's lack of a superstar player, Millsap said the Jazz don't need one.

"We're a team," he said.Brian T. SmithTwitter: @tribjazz
