Today: 'Shadows' starts 'Month of Melville' at Tower

The Salt Lake Film Society's "Tower Through Time" series is back with a "Month of Melville," screening the films of French director Jean-Pierre Melville in February.

The series starts Friday, Feb. 3, with Melville's 1969 thriller "Army of Shadows," running at 4 p.m. daily through Thursday at the Tower Theater, 876 E. 900 South, Salt Lake City.

The film was a dark and gritty look at the French Resistance during World War II. Melville was a Resistance fighter himself, and he depicts the movement as a small, suspicious cabal of hardened fighters, dealing out death without mercy.

Other Melville films on the slate:

Feb. 10 • "Bob le Flambeur" (1956), about a gambler (Roger Duchesne) who decides to rob a casino.

Feb. 17 • "Leon Morin, Priest" (1961), in which a war widow (Emmanuele Riva) becomes attracted to a young priest (Jean-Paul Belmondo).

Feb. 24 • "Le Cercle Rouge" (1970), a cops-and-robbers tale.

Tickets are $6.25 for matinee shows, at the Tower box office.
