Harmons will open its new 70,000-square-foot urban grocery store on Wednesday, Feb. 15, in downtown Salt Lake City.
The City Creek store opens at 9 a.m. and includes all the things one expects from a modern-day market: fresh produce, a meat and seafood counter, an in-store bakery and deli, a floral department, grab-and-go food items and a pharmacy. But here are 17 things you might find surprising:
Cooking school • Headed by Chef Adalberto Diaz, the school offers a range of classes, including wine education.
Seafood steamer • Buy fresh shrimp, salmon or halibut and have it perfectly steamed for free.
Pizza • A 600-degree stone oven will cook a pizza in nine minutes.
Salt display • An array of colorful salts think white, pink and gray including Fleur de sel from France and hickory smoked.
Cheese counter • More than 300 types from around the world.
Freestyle soda machine • The store has three of the high-tech machines that offer 120 combinations of drinks.
Sushi • Sit down at the bar and watch a trained chef prepare your order.
Wok bar • Dozens of Asian specialties from orange chicken and fried rice to Kung Pao chicken are hot and ready to go.
Salad and soup bar • Possibly the largest salad bar in downtown.
Cafe • Fresh roasted coffee from Logan's Cafe Ibis as well as pastries and gelato both made on site.
Registered dietitian • Laura Holtrop-Kohl will offer regular nutrition classes; or you can make an appointment, and she will teach you how to shop for healthy foods.
Healthy check-out line • In this line, tempting candy displays have been replaced with fresh fruit and low-calorie granola.
WiFi • Customers can check email and Facebook while sitting in couches and chairs. There's even a fireplace.
Conference rooms • Reserve for parties, meetings or book clubs.
Mail • There's a full-service U.S. Post Office on the mezzanine.
Art walls • Art by Utah artists available for sale.
Paper bags • No plastic grocery bags are available. Customers can get paper bags or buy (or bring their own) reusable ones.
