An autopsy has shown that the Tuesday death of a 1-year-old girl in Salt Lake City was not suspicious.
Investigators initially deemed the girl's death suspicious because "there were some things we couldn't explain that needed to be looked at," said Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Shawn Josephson. He earlier said doctors had raised concerns about the child's condition.
However, medical examiners ruled out investigators' preliminary suspicions on Tuesday afternoon, Josephson said. While they had not determined the cause of death, "there is nothing that indicates any kind of foul play," Josephson said.
Officers were called to a home near 500 North and Irie Lane (1700 West) at 4:43 a.m. for a child medical emergency.
"Our officers did find the child in need of medical assistance, but we aren't releasing the nature of [her injuries]." Josephson said.
Soon after the child arrived at Primary Children's Medical Center, doctors pronounced the baby dead.
Josephson would not discuss the findings that initially troubled investigators and doctors, saying that releasing details of a debunked suspicion could "stigmatize" an already grieving family.
An unspecified number of people at the child's home were questioned, but Josephson could not confirm if the parents were among them. He said the investigation would continue until the cause of death is clear.
