Dean among Utah tenors

The career of Raymond Tymas-Jones, dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah, is as long in scope as it is deep in experience.

A native of Washington, D.C., Tymas-Jones grew up in a home where everyone learned to sing along to his mother's piano accompaniment, even if his minister father couldn't produce dulcet tones. Tymas-Jones took to the trombone and piano and, by the time he reached Howard University, had settled on honing his golden tenor voice to a shining, controlled sheen.

After seven years as a U. dean, he's been at the forefront of making arts and arts programming more accessible to students, with an abundance of free concerts. In that spirit, and in commemoration of Black History Month, Tymas-Jones joins forces with an interdisciplinary ensemble of musicians to bring the poetry of Langston Hughes to glorious song this coming Sunday.
