No charges against man once arrested for purported homicide

Charges will not be filed against a man suspected of causing an acquaintance's death last summer in Taylorsville, police said Wednesday.

Police now believe 57-year-old Randy Lee Allred died from head injuries suffered in a fall.

George Bruce Jones, 55, was arrested in August in connection with Allred's July 23 death, according to Salt Lake County jail documents.

But Taylorsville police Lt. Tracy Wyant said Wednesday that charges will not be filed against Jones, or anyone else, because the Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death was not a homicide.

The medical examiner listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the back of the head, and the manner of death as "undetermined."

Police said Jones came under suspicion for using a false name to report a "found body" on the morning of July 23.

Information later provided by Jones, along with evidence at the scene and preliminary findings from the medical examiner, led police to believe Allred's death may have been a homicide.

Taylorsville police Sgt. Vaughn Allen said follow-up investigation found the two men — who were staying at the same home — had a disagreement.

But there was no indication of a fight, Allen said. Rather, a high-level of alcohol led to Allred falling down and hurting himself, he said.

"Injuries on [Allred's] body are consistent with falls," Allen said.

Wyant said if Jones had been honest from the beginning, "it would have expedited the process for everyone, including himself."

The case is inactive at this point.
