There's still snow on the ground in many parts of Utah, but if you're serious about growing great tomatoes this summer — REALLY serious — you can get a jump on the neighborhood competition on Saturday at Red Butte Garden.

Would you like to harvest your first tomato before the middle of August? Are there heirloom varieties you can't find in local garden centers that you want to grow?

If the answer to those questions is "yes," sign up for the tomato propagation workshop at Red Butte on Saturday, March 3, and learn from the Tomato King himself, master gardener Golden Reeves.

The three-hour workshop will include the secrets to successful seed starting in your own home and planting some unusual tomato and pepper seeds for your garden. You'll not only start seeds for the garden but you'll learn techniques to extend the growing season.

Participants will plant and take home a flat of tomato seeds for germinating and growing at home. You will also receive three walls of water so you can plant your tomatoes in the garden before the last frost.

There's a morning session (9 a.m.-noon) and an afternoon session (1-4 p.m.), and the cost is $40 for Red Butte Garden members and $48 for non-members.
