The Legislature put a higher price on the heads of coyotes Thursday in hopes of encouraging hunters to kill 20,000 of them.
The House voted 62-7 for SB245 and sent it to Gov. Gary Herbert for his signature.
It would raise the bounty from $25 a head to $50. Sen. Ralph Okerlund, R-Monroe, the bill's sponsor, says it is needed to protect deer herds decimated by the predators. Humane Society of Utah Director Gene Baierschmidt opposed the bill, saying annihilation of coyotes may do nothing to aid deer populations.
