Grown son busted after dad finds out his credit card had been used

A South Jordan man had the night of his life riding around the valley in a limo and checking into a lavish hotel, charging more than $5,000 on his dad's credit card, according to prosecutors. But now he is paying for it.

The 26-year-old man was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with second-degree felony unlawful use of a financial transaction card and unlawful possession of a financial transaction card, a third-degree felony.

Court documents say the man — who had been living on food stamps — was staying with his parents and said he "felt like he needed to escape," so in January he took his father's stashed-away VISA card and called a limo service, according to court documents.

His first stop in the limo was the Utah State Liquor Store at 125 W. 9000 South in Sandy, where the man made about a $60 purchase.

Next, the man had the limo driver take him to the Apple Store at The Gateway. This time both the driver and the man went inside.

A store employee said the man used "his daddy's card" to buy about $4,100 in products, according to court documents. The man bought himself a pair of headphones and iPod Touch. He also bought the limo driver a laptop and headphones.

Then it was on to The Grand America Hotel where, court records state, the man rented a room and flashed his father's VISA card. The hotel clerk asked for ID and confirmed the last name matched, according to court records.

The final cost of the room and services (which included in-room dining, pay-per-view movies and spa services) was roughly $724.

The man signed the credit card receipt and left behind his public benefits Utah Horizon debit card when he checked out.

The total cost for the limousine service was $450.

When the man decided to return to his parents' house he put his father's VISA card, now with $5,348.42 in unauthorized charges, back in the drawer where he found it.
