'Evening in Paris' at Grand Theatre

Before the rent shot sky-high, The City of Lights was every artist's nesting ground, from Ernest Hemingway's famous neighborhood to Jean-Paul Sartre's favorite sidewalk cafes during time outs with Simone de Beauvoir.

More than a few musicians know Paris as the stomping ground of famed guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt, who soaked up vital gypsy vibes from the city's Romani encampments close to the outskirts. Technically, Reinhardt was Belgian, but that matters hardly when the Quintette du Hot Club de France he formed with violinist Stephane Grappelli made so many important waves in the jazz world,

In short, the quintet said it was find and dandy for jazz to cross-pollinate in all sorts of wonderful ways with ethnic music across the board.

Cross-pollination is a key word behind "Evening in Paris," Grand Theatre's gathering of Salt Lake City talent in the tradition of Paris nightclub and stage-show mainstays. With this show you get not just the Reinhardt stylings of Red Rock Hot Club, but the vocal talents of Melissa Pace Tanner with pianist and accordion player Stephen Keen. Cirque de la Soul acrobat and aerial artists add their gravity-defying derring-do for a night that promises to transport you beyond State Street Salt Lake City.
