Utah football: Cornerback Conroy Black impresses at Pro Day

The Utah Utes' streak of sending defensive backs to the NFL could continue this year, given Conroy Black's performance at Pro Day.

Black ran a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash and did well in agility drills.

The 6-foot, 186-pound Black said he felt he had something to prove since he wasn't invited to the NFL combine.

"I was definitely motivated," he said. "I felt like I should have gotten an invite but I guess I fell under the radar since I played junior college and really only one year at Utah."

Black earned honorable mention honors in the Pac-12 after he tied for the most interceptions with four. He also had 39 tackles and four pass breakups.

Black sounded confident he could get drafted, following in the footsteps of other Utah corners.

Brandon Burton was drafted in the fifth round last year by Minnesota, R.J. Stanford was taken in the fifth round in 2010 by Carolina and Robert Johnson went in the same round to Tennessee. Brice McCain was taken in the sixth round in 2009 by Houston and Sean Smith was taken in the second round by Miami the same year.

Black said he watched tape of McCain's pro day to help him prepare.

"I'm happy how things went," he said. "I did the best I could."

Offensive linemen Tony Bergstrom, John Cullen, defensive lineman Derrick Shelby, fullback Shawn Asiata and linebackers Matt Martinez and Chaz Walker also participated in the event, attended by about 25 scouts.

Shelby said his numbers were similar to what he logged at the combine, so he was satisfied. "Now I just have to be patient and not get too antsy and see how things shake out," he said.
