A car collided with a TRAX train near 700 S. West Temple Tuesday morning, delaying the commuter train and closing roads near the scene.

The driver ran a red light on southbound 700 South and hit the westbound red line train about 7:40 a.m., said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Scott White.

Streets around 700 South and West Temple were closed until about 10 a.m.

The accident also caused "significant delays" on TRAX for more than an hour, said spokesman Gerry Carpenter.

A coupler on the train was broken, likely causing "tens of thousands of dollars" in damage, Carpenter said.

The driver suffered minor injuries in the crash, and was to be cited for running the red light, according to Carpenter.
