Boxing: Utah Golden Gloves Tournament begins Friday

Dozens of the state's best amateur boxers will be seeking state titles in 10 weight classes when the Utah Golden Gloves Tournament begins this weekend at Sorenson Multicultural and Unity Fitness Center, 855 W. California Ave., in Salt Lake City.

Bouts begin at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night, with the champions crowned Saturday moving on to the Rocky Mountain Golden Gloves Regional Tournament, which will be held April 13-14 at the Sports Mall in Murray.

Admission is $12 for adults 18 and older and $5 for children five years and older.

Perhaps Utah's most-accomplished amateur boxer recently is Isaac Aguilar of West Valley City, who will compete in the 130-pound weight division. Aguilar made it to the quarterfinals when Utah hosted the National Golden Gloves Tournament in 2009 before losing a close decision to California's Michael Ruiz.

Another rising star is Brandon Packard, a BYU student who recently won the USA Boxing state championship in the 141-pound division. He fights out of the South Jordan-based Fullmer Brothers Gym.

This weekend's champions will square off against boxers from Idaho, Wyoming and Montana in the regionals in two weeks.
