The American Institute of Architects is holding its annual "Box City" project for elementary students.
The group's Young Architects Forum developed the popular eight-week program in 2004. The program, which combines math, language arts, social studies, science and visual arts has since been embraced by students and teachers alikewith a few hundred grade schoolers involved every year.
The fourth through sixth grade students are introduced to concepts such as scale, space, structure, rhythm, typology and planning. Negotiating skills are developed as the students tackle design and city planning.
Box City will sprawl through the Urban Room at Salt Lake City's Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, beginning Wednesday, April 18.
