As far back as late December, the Utah State basketball coaching staff has been working on fortifying a roster that lacks outside shooting.

On Friday, the Aggies received some help in the form of Spencer Butterfield.

A 6-foot-4 shooting guard out of Yuba College in California, Butterfield committed to the Aggies after taking a recent trip to Logan.

Butterfield was named the co-player of the year in California, a significant accomplishment, given the high level of junior college play there. He will be a junior .

USU coaches love Butterfield's toughness and his shooting ability, two areas that were sorely lacking this past season. Utah State is also expected to receive a commitment from Marvin Jean, a 6-5 small forward out of Sullivan County Community College in New York. Quan Conner, a 6-3 point guard, will visit Utah State next weekend.

If the Aggies receive commitments from those three, they will be over the scholarship limit, which would likely lead to departures from players currently on the team.

Utah State suffered through a mediocre season but rebounded in the postseason with a run to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament championship game, where it lost to Mercer at the Spectrum.
