Last year, Red Butte Garden hit high notes with its 21 concerts. This year, the concert series has expanded again, with 26 shows scheduled from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

"That's the new high-water mark for the Garden," said Chris Mautz, who books and promotes Red Butte shows.

New this year are partial season packages of six shows. Officials say the packages are based on genres, but they appear designed to lure in different demographics.

Package D, for example, is catered to younger audiences, with the cheapest price, and Bon Iver, Wilco and Andrew Bird in the lineup. The other three packages cater to Red Butte Garden's most loyal demographic: older audiences.

Package A, with Dead Can Dance and Sheryl Crow, will lure in fans of the 1980s and 1990s; Package B will entice jazz and world-music fans with Diana Krall and Norah Jones; and Package C will attract fans of Americana and roots music with Steve Earle and Steve Martin, on the banjo.

"We didn't try to over-think it too much," Mautz said of the grouping, explaining why 26-year-old Colbie Caillat is in the same package as 72-year-old Mavis Staples.

Carter Livingston is board chair at Red Butte Garden, but quickly adds another title: "Chief concert-goer." Livingston, who married his wife four years ago at Red Butte, said this year's schedule offers "a little bit for everyone." He showed his diversity of musical taste — which, in turn, underscores the diversity of the series — by gushing about shows he wants to see this summer: Wilco, The Shins, B-52's, Squeeze and Trombone Shorty.

The packages allow Red Butte Garden members to take advantage of the early purchase period, a week before other Garden members and two weeks before the general public, as well as $5 discounts per show. In addition, some shows have sold out to members before tickets were available to the general public.

The lineup includes popular returning acts, such as Josh Ritter, Brandi Carlile and Bonnie Raitt. Some musicians, Mautz said, ask their booking agents to look for open Red Butte Garden dates when planning summer shows. The venue has a "lasting and impactful" effect on musicians, he said. "The first time Sheryl Crow played, she said she wanted to come back every year," he said.

In past years, a handful of shows were added to the schedule mid-season. But with 26 planned shows, the staff and volunteers look like they'll already be busy managing venue crowds. "Never say never," Mautz added.
