Boy hit by truck while crossing Sandy street

A teenage boy was in critical condition Sunday after he was hit by a pickup truck while crossing a street in Sandy.

The boy, 14, was crossing 10600 South near 390 East with his two older brothers while walking home from church at about 4:40 p.m., said Sandy police Lt. Jeff Duval.

Without a marked crosswalk, the boys made it to the center median, Duval said. There, the oldest brother, 16, told the other two to stop because he saw traffic approaching.

"It appears the 14-year-old did not hear and continued to run across the street," Duval said.

Drivers in the inside lane saw the teen and slowed, but he was struck by a Ford Ranger in the outside lane, Duval said.

"Multiple witnesses ... said [the driver] was going the speed limit ... and didn't see the child until he ran out," Duval said.

The driver was a 20-year-old man from Sandy, said Duval, who added that drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors.

The injured boy was unconscious when he was flown from the scene to an area hospital, where he underwent surgery, Duval said.
