Civics Central: New Herriman school, Sandy road widening, Canyons vote

Here's your weekly roundup of what local city councils, school boards and other government entities are tackling during regularly scheduled meetings. All meetings are open to the public, and citizens are welcome to voice their opinions during designated times. If you do wish to speak at a particular meeting, you may need to sign up in advance.

Jordan Board of Education • Takes public comment on proposed location of a new elementary school at approximately 14000 South and 5600 West in Herriman, and then votes on the staff recommendation to site the school there. The board will also discuss spending upwards of $900,000 on new math textbooks; Tuesday, April 17, 6:30 p.m., at 7905 S. Redwood Road, West Jordan.

Canyons Board of Education • Votes on revising the daily schedule for elementary school students, shortening the day by 20 minutes and requiring students to be in school all day on Fridays, which have been half-days; Tuesday, April 17, 17, 7 p.m., at 9361 S. 300 East, Sandy.

Davis Board of Education • Votes on proposed fees and a recommendation to increase all school meal prices by 15 cents; Tuesday, April 17, 5:30 p.m., at 45 E. State St., Farmington.

Sandy City Council • Hosts a public hearing on the proposed widening of 9000 South from 500 to 800 West; Tuesday, April 17, 7 p.m., Sandy City Hall, 10000 Centennial Parkway.

Provo Municipal Council • Will vote on a proposal to lease the iProvo fiber-optic network to Veracity Networks. The agreement would return ownership of the network to the city from Veracity, which defaulted on its purchase agreement. Veracity would lease the network's operations center and operate the network for Provo. The council is also scheduled to vote on vacating 100 South between University Avenue and 100 West, in order to sell the street to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its proposed Provo City Center Temple; Tuesday, April 17, 7 p.m., in the Municipal Council Chambers, 351 W. Center St.

Midvale City Council • Discusses the 2013 fiscal year budget; Tuesday, April 17, 6:30 p.m., 655 W. Center St.

South Jordan City Council >> Will vote on lowering the parks and recreation impact fee; Tuesday, April 17, 6 p.m., at 1600 W. Towne Center Dr. View the agenda at bit.ly/HOxMyU.

Eagle Mountain City Council • Will act on an ordinance allowing off-highway vehicles to be used on certain city streets and trails. The vehicles would be barred from Ranches Parkway, portions of Eagle Mountain Boulevard, State Route 73 and Pony Express Parkway; Tuesday, April 17, 7 p.m., 1650 E. Stagecoach Run.

Taylorsville City Council • Holds a special work session on the fiscal year 2012 budget; Wednesday, April 13, 3:30 p.m., 2600 W. Taylorsville Blvd. Then, at 6:30 p.m., the council reconvenes to review ordinances on animal permits and general business license fees.

Sandy City Planning Commission • Discusses the 30-year development plan for the city's civic center; Thursday, April 19, 6:15 p.m., at Sandy City Hall, 10000 Centennial Parkway.

Holladay City Council >> The City Council will consider a resolution to move the historic Casto Home and discuss codes for street-level floor space at the Village Center development; Thursday, April 19, 6 p.m., at 4580 S. 2300 East. View the agenda at bit.ly/HXqwC2.
