Women's basketball: Utah Valley signs two

Orem — Utah Valley University women's basketball coach Cathy Nixon announced Wednesday that she has signed Georgia Agnew and Karlee Kartchner to National Letters of Intent.

The high school seniors and will begin their college careers in Orem this fall. "We're really excited about both Karlee and Georgia and we feel that they will both fit in great as people and student-athletes," said Nixon. "They will definitely come in and help take our program to another level as well."

Agnew is a 5'9" point guard from Hamilton, New Zealand but moved to Utah this past year and played her senior season at Salem Hills High School in Salem, Utah. Agnew is a talented ball-handler that recently helped Salem Hills to a region title as she averaged 10 points and over five assists per game. She is also a stellar student in the classroom as she holds a perfect 4.0 GPA.

"Georgia has a unique situation in terms of how we found her," Nixon said in talking about how she moved from New Zealand to Utah to play her senior year at Salem Hills. "She had a great year at Salem Hills and is just a great fundamentally sound true point guard with all the intangibles of becoming a solid player. She has great court vision and is a true quarterback and coach on the floor."

Kartchner is a 6'0" forward from Hyrum, Utah (Mountain Crest HS) and was recently named both the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News' 4A MVP after she led the state in scoring and rebounding by averaging 23 points and 11 rebounds per game during her senior year. Kartchner also led Mountain Crest to the state semifinal game this year and a state runner-up finish during her junior year. Kartchner was also named Academic All-State and is on the National Honor Society as she holds a 4.0 GPA.

"Karlee had a great year as she was named the 4A MVP. She definitely carried her team and came on strong at the end of the year." Nixon added. "She is a versatile player and her biggest strength is her work ethic. She's a gritty kid and found a way to overcome double and triple-team defenses this past year and in spite of that really dominated."  —
