Utah Valley University students competing at the recent SkillsUSA state competition in Salt Lake City set a school record, winning 27 gold medals and 62 medals overall, the most among post-secondary educational institutions in the state.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization that partners with teachers and industry to prepare high school and college students for careers in trade, technical, health and skilled service occupations. UVU's 27 gold-medal winners will now compete at the National Leadership and Skills Conference scheduled for June 23-28 in Kansas City.

Over the past 11 years, UVU has been ranked No. 1 in the nation four times by SkillsUSA, No. 2 six times and No. 3 one time. The rankings are based on total medal counts upon the completion of the national competition.

More than 15,000 students, teachers and business partners are expected to participate in the SkillsUSA national competition, which evaluates students performance in more than 90 occupational categories.
