Provo seeking residents' redistricting ideas

Provo residents have until April 30 to submit proposals for realigning the Municipal Council districts.

The city is accepting proposed maps through its website until then. The software is the same that residents used to submit proposed maps for the school district earlier this year. It is similar to what was used by the Legislature during its redistricting process.

A committee of residents will review the proposed maps and submit an analysis and recommendation to the council in June.

Five of the council's seven seats represent specific geographic districts in the city. Like congressional districts, the council district boundaries have to be adjusted to maintain equal representation.

Based on the current census data, the districts should have about 21,000 people each.

Fifty proposed maps have been submitted to the city since February, city officials say.

The council is required to set its district boundaries by July 27.
