At the Coast Guard Academy, I was not allowed to listen to recorded music as a freshman.

So, when I began my sophomore year, I joined as many record clubs as I could, under different names so I could fulfill my hunger for music. (Our Honor Code was much stricter than BYU's, by the way, so I am glad I got away with it. I am not bragging, because I wish the Honor Code at CGA wasn't as strict — I once almost got reported to the administration for seeing two movies at a local theater when I had only paid for one. I know it was wrong, but I don't think getting kicked out would be an appropriate punishment.)

Anyway, when given the chance to get 12 CD's free just by joining, you are forced to pick albums you otherwise wouldn't buy when you went to a record store. I remember ordering an Emmylou Harris albm, "Roses in the Snow." While much of the album was a snoozer, I have always loved her rendition of the old traditional "Green Pastures," which was accompanied by the sublime vocals of Ricky Skaggs and Dolly Parton. Dolly makes everything better:

For the record, I have repented all of the sins I committed at the Academy. I will never again join a record club under a false name. Because they don't exist anymore.
