A team of two Riverton High School automotive technology students won top honors at a skills competition Thursday.

Jordan Kearns and Chandler Adkins correctly identified and fixed intentionally installed defects in a vehicle during the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition at Salt Lake Community College's Miller Campus in Sandy.

Kearns and Adkins can choose between scholarships offered by technical schools in Ohio and Arizona or from SLCC, AAA Utah spokeswoman Rolayne Fairclough said.

Kearns, Adkins and their instructor, Jay Que Hales, will advance to a national competition at Ford's headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., June 12.

The pair competed against two-person student teams from Clearfield, Fremont, Hunter Layton, Northridge, Provo, Southwest Area Technical Center, Timpview and Woods Cross high schools, all in Utah.

Teams from Utah and other states are competing for nearly $12 million in scholarships offered at both the state and national levels.
