A 25-year-old woman was running on a St. George bike path Wednesday when a man knocked her down and raped her, police reported Thursday.

After the assault, the woman managed to break free and contact a family member, who took her to get medical attention, according to a news release from St. George police Capt. James Van Fleet.

The attack occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday as the woman was headed south toward the tunnel that runs beneath Sunset Boulevard.

She described the suspect as white and about 5-foot-8, with medium build, brown or hazel eyes, wearing a black bandana on his head and a black short sleeve shirt and black pants.

Van Fleet said information was obtained from a police canvass of the area and that was being followed up on. Meanwhile, several businesses were reviewing their surveillance tapes in an attempt to locate video of the suspect, he said.
