H. David Burton, the former presiding bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was appointed Thursday to the board of directors of the Utah Transit Authority by Gov. Gary Herbert.
Burton, who helped shepherd the City Creek Center and the Salt Lake City Main Street Plaza projects, among other things, held the position of presiding bishop for 16 years.
He previously had served as a counselor in the Presiding Bishopric and was a budget officer for the LDS Church. In addition, he has held posts at the Utah Tax Commission and Kennecott Utah Copper.
In making the appointment, the governor praised Burton for his long and distinguished leadership and service.
"He has consistently demonstrated a willingness to use his wisdom and vast experience for the betterment of individuals and communities," Herbert said. "His service on the board of directors will be a great benefit to UTA and to our whole state."
Burton takes the seat now occupied by Chris Bleak, president and CEO of the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools. Bleak will remain on the board, however, as an appointee of Utah County.
