New "Sister Wives" book is full of baloney

Reading the prologue of the new book by the stars of "Sister Wives," I learned two things about polygamist family patriarch Kody Brown.

First, he has trouble with facts. There are four mistakes in the first two paragraphs.

Second, Brown is seriously self-deceived. He interprets events in his own favor, unaware of reality.

Brown recounts the appearance he and his wives made at the summer 2010 Television Critics Association press tour. And he completely misinterprets what happened.

Here's what he wrote at the end of the prologue to "Becoming Sister Wives: The Story of an Unconventional Marriage":

"My heart is pounding as I step onto the stage. I can feel the smile plastered on my face. It's my defense mechanism - this silly grin. There's a sea of faces in the auditorium. The audience is silent. I can't tell what they're thinking. I feel the smile slip from my face. My heart is in my mouth.

"Suddenly, the audience begins to clap. I feel the atmosphere begin to warm. I sense that they are drawn to us. I think they are ready to hear our story."

That is absolute baloney. The "audience" is a group of journalists, most of whom belong to the TCA. We're there to interview the Browns. And we don't clap. Not for big stars. Not for polygamists.

That applause came from publicists, network executives and assorted flunkies in the back of the room. They were clapping to make the Browns feel better. To try to drum up some enthusiasm for "Sister Wives," which they had a vested interest in seeing succeed.

Brown no doubt remembers it his way. And when you're up on stage with the lights shining in your eyes, it's hard to see the "audience."

But if he thought that a room full of cynical journalists was applauding him and soaking up his message, he's seriously mistaken. And he calls into question everything else he writes in the book.
