MOVIES

Water battles or water breaking? That's the choice of new movies this weekend.

"Battleship" — inspired by the classic board game — serves up Michael Bay-style militarized bombast, in an obnoxiously loud action thriller that pits U.S. Navy ships against alien invaders at sea. Director Peter Berg mashes up elements of "Transformers," "Pearl Harbor" and "Armageddon" in one brainless package.

"What to Expect When You're Expecting" — inspired by the self-help book — is an uneven comedy following five women through impending motherhood. Some of the performers, like Cameron Diaz as a celebrity fitness trainer, are annoying. Others, notably Anna Kendrick's turn as a food-truck chef knocked up after a one-night stand with a rival cook (Chace Crawford), are quite touching. The best jokes come from "The Dudes Group," a collection of stroller-pushing dads led by Chris Rock.

Best of the week is "Sound of My Voice," with another star turn by actress/screenwriter Brit Marling ("Another Earth"). Here, she plays an enigmatic cult leader who claims to be from the future, and whose words unnerve two would-be investigative journalists. The movie's sparse style highlights Marling's ethereal screen presence.

Lastly, there's "First Position," a documentary about the young dancers in an international ballet competition. Director Bess Kargman draws some compelling portraits of the dancers, but doesn't show enough of the dancing.

Also, if you missed it on Wednesday, "The Dictator" is out there for your raunch-comedy needs.

Trampled By Turtles • Although Tramped By Turtles lead singer Dave Simonett was unfailingly polite, don't call TBT a band that plays bluegrass, or speedgrass, or thrashgrass, or any other variation of "grass" we can come up with. With influences ranging from Townes Van Zandt to Neil Young, the band plays acoustic music with an edge. "I was an angry young kid, and punk spoke to me," Simonett said in a Tribune interview. "It was the first music that I connected with." But Simonett also liked acoustic music, so the native Minnesotan met some like-minded friends in the thriving Minneapolis club scene to create a band that can not only play fast, but can do something other bluegrass bands can't: play slow. That's why the band's most recent album "Stars & Satellites" is more mellow than past efforts, perfect for warm summer days as well as making their first national network appearance last month on David Letterman's "Late Show" — where the temperature was a balmy 48 degrees. Brown Bird opens.

Bad Veins • The first time Benjamin Davis and Sebastien Schultz of Bad Veins played Kilby Court, Davis estimated the crowd as being three or four people. But that was before the Cincinnati-based rock duo had released its first album, and even before its first single was released to radio. The second time around, the crowd was much bigger, and Kilby Court should be packed this weekend as the band has just put out its new record, "The Mess We've Made." The band has evolved from its lo-fi beginnings to a more robust, energetic rock sound, but its unique stage set — an antique megaphone, a rotary telephone, and a reel-to-reel tape recorder — and the band's outfits — Army shirts and jackets — remain the same. In a Tribune interview, Davis said the recorder came from his father, who was trying to get rid of it. "Dad told me that 'You are a musician, you can find some use for it,'" Davis recalled. "I said, 'Not likely.'" But eventually the recorder and other vintage props came to be a part of the retro-but-fresh-sounding band's show. "Let's look the way we sound," Davis said.

A pair of music icons from different generations appear on television this weekend.

Mick Jagger, 68, is both the host and the musical guest on the season finale of Saturday Night Live (Saturday, 10:30 p.m., Ch. 30), marking his fourth time as the show's musical guest and first time doing the hosting thing.

And Lady Gaga, 26, appears in the season finale of The Simpsons (Sunday, 7 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13) — in animated form, of course. Gaga is actually 11 years younger than "SNL" and only about three years older than "The Simpsons."
