The case of a lawmaker's missing laptop appears to have been solved.
Rep. Ryan Wilcox, R-Ogden, discovered Wednesday morning that a burglar had broken into his truck and taken a haul that included his computer, Bluetooth hardware and a bag of stuff all totaling about $3,900.
But Ogden police Lt. Scott Conley said Wilcox was one of the last victims of what detectives believe was a two-month burglary spree in the Ogden area that saw more than 100 cars broken into and personal items stolen.
Conley said they believed they cracked the case with the arrest of Amanda Buck, 25, who was being held in Weber County Jail on six counts of burglary, six counts of felony theft and three counts of possession of burglary tools.
Buck was arrested in Ogden after police followed up on a tip and pulled Buck over in a 1987 BMW along the 900 block of 1100 North.
Conley said there was a male in the car, but he was not arrested.
Detectives believe Buck was the alleged "ringleader" for the rash of thefts though Conley said the "group didn't appear to be well-structured."
He said they are trying to locate other suspects.
The case came to light when Wilcox posted a lengthy missive on Facebook Wednesday taking a somewhat mellow and philosophical view of the crime.
At one point in the post directed toward the thief, he said, "Finally, more than anything else, I hope you get the help you need. You've set us back some, and it hurts, but next time (if) you really need something, just ask."
Wilcox, who missed the morning legislative interim session Wednesday at the Capitol due to the theft and investigation, said he was glad to have his items recovered.
He relayed the message, of course, on Facebook.
"From what I've been able to discover, getting caught with my backpack was probably the best thing that could have happened for this particular woman," Wilcox wrote. "Turns out she doesn't need a laptop, but she does need help. Hopefully this will be a start."
His post had generated 61 likes and 48 comments as of Thursday.
