Sandy • Defender Nat Borchers fired a loose ball into the top corner in stoppage time to give Real Salt Lake a wild 3-2 victory over FC Dallas at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday night.

The victory was the sixth in a row for RSL at home against FC Dallas, and it vaulted the team into first place in the MLS Western Conference — though San Jose plays at Sporting KC on Sunday with the chance to leapfrog back into the top spot.

The rare strike by Borchers saved RSL from giving up the lead twice, both on errors by backup goalkeeper Kyle Reynish that negated goals from Alvaro Saborio — all in the second half.

On the first, Reynish parried a shot by FC Dallas' Matt Hedges, but did so from inside the goal mouth. Saborio equalized within minutes, but Reynish later was caught flat-footed as a shot deflected off his right hand and into the net.

Reynish was playing in place of regular keeper Nick Rimando, who's away with the U.S. national team alongside midfielder Kyle Beckerman. Both RSL and FC Dallas were playing at less than full strength, because of injuries and national-team call-ups.
