Clearfield High student arrested in smoke-bomb incident

A Clearfield High School student who apparently wanted a jump on summer vacation instead ended up in police custody after triggering a fire alarm Wednesday morning with a smoke bomb.

Clearfield Assistant Police Chief Mike Stenquist says the 17-year-old boy was arrested after the alarm, which went off at 10:18 a.m., resulted in a 25-minute evacuation of the school's 1,600 students.

There was smoke, but no fire, when emergency responders arrived. However, four female students were treated at the scene for minor burns after being sprayed with sparks from the boy's homemade smoke bomb.

Stenquist said the smoke bomb also damaged about a 20-foot area of concrete and linoleum flooring when the boy allegedly tossed it into the school's common area.

"This student didn't consider the consequences of his actions. This was an end-of-school-year prank that ended badly," Stenquist said.

The boy, a senior, was being held at the Farmington Bay Juvenile Detention Facility on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated arson. The Davis County Attorney's Office is screening the case.
