An attempted robbery at a TRAX light rail station early Tuesday left a man bruised and the bicycle-borne suspect at large.

Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter says the suspect approached a UTA worker cleaning the station platform about 5:05 a.m. at the Meadowbrook Station, 3900 S. 188 West, in South Salt Lake.

"A fight and then an assault and attempted robbery apparently occurred. The victim ended up with a pack of cigarettes stolen and minor injuries for which he did not require treatment," Carpenter said. "The suspect fled on a bike."

An unidentified woman at the scene Tuesday morning said the victim fought off the suspect after he also attempted to take the UTA worker's cellphone and demanded his wallet.

UTA police are working with South Salt Lake police in an effort to locate and arrest the suspect. He is described as a black in man in his 30s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and thin.
