The search for a 21-year-old Texas man presumed drowned in the Colorado River resumed Thursday, the Grand County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

The man, who disappeared beneath the shallow but rapidly flowing waters near the Gold Bar Recreation Site on Wednesday afternoon, was one of a group of University of Texas at El Paso geology students visiting the area.

Just before 5 p.m., the victim attempted to walk across the river to an island, as several other students had done, but he fell and was swept downstream.

A search was launched from the air and in the river, but was called off at nightfall. Boats and divers were being used in the search effort.
